The new Muriqui Linux was released:
A Debian personalization with Red Hat installer

During the I Doctum Seminar for Information Technology hold in Teófilo Otoni-MG-Brazil last week, a new Linux Distro has been released. The Muriqui Linux is the first Debian based Distro in Brazil that incorporates the easy-to-use Anaconda graphical installer from the Red Hat/Progeny Project. Another facility that is provided by the Muriqui Linux is the option to install a DRBL - Diskless Remote Boot Server automatically during the installation procedure. The principal aim of this effort is to provide a Distro specially adapted to Educational Environments and Digital Inclusion in Brazil, where the use of disk less stations for digital inclusion is growing fast and becoming standard. Moreover, the Distro has been tested in a group of “Telecentros” for Digital Inclusion in north-east of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, with excellent results, what means that, in a region of the country where analphabetic rate achieves up to 65%, the local monitors are able to reinstall the system under remote orientation but with no serious difficulties.

The development of this personalization of the Debian Distro is granted as a Free Software by DoctumTec, the Technology Support Department of the Instituto Doctum. DoctumTec is taking part on different Free Software Projects by means of a group of Linux Experts employers. They are contributing to the localization of Anaconda and DRBL Projects. For more detailed informations see www.doctum.com.br and in the project web site: www.muriquilinux.com.br.

Anaconda – is the Graphical Installer developed by Red Hat Linux and adapted to the Debian Linux Project by the Progeny.

DRBL – Disk less Remote Boot in Linux is a Taiwanese Free Software Project from the National Center for High-Performance Computing, located in Hsinchu, Taiwan. DRBL uses PXE or etherboot to let the client machine boot, allowing the ease configuration of remote and local applications. This is the same principle of the Smart Terminal developed by DoctumTec.

The maintainer of both Projects in Brazil -DRBL and Anaconda/Progeny - is Reinaldo José Moreira, supported by DoctumTec.

Muriqui Linux has its name in honor to the Muriqui – the Woolly Spider Monkey, the greatest monkey of the American continent and one of the rarest and more endangered primate of the World. The biggest population of this specie is conserved in a farm in the City of Caratinga, where the DoctumTec is based.
